While many automakers in the US market have been taking advantage of the trend toward SUVs and crossovers, Volkswagen’s SUV lineup has been surprisingly lacking. The one nameplate currently under the brand’s belt is the Tiguan. However, we saw hints of a new midsize crossover from VW at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, and now the vehicle is finally seeing the light of day under the name “Atlas.”
The Volkswagen Atlas has been hinted at for awhile, with VW CEO Hinrich Woebecken revealing earlier in 2016 that the crossover would have a simple, more easy-to-pronounce name for the American market. With its sharp, two-syllable name, “Atlas” appears to have fulfilled that promise.
Information on pricing has not yet been unveiled, but production will begin sometime late this year, following by its sales launch in early 2017.
This new midsize crossover Volkswagen is clearly designed to appeal to American consumers, and the strategic release of the Atlas comes at a time when VW sales are lower than usual. If priced competitively, the Volkswagen Atlas could help the brand pull ahead in the market once again and invite a whole new demographic of young families looking for stylish but practical vehicles.
