A Look Back at the Porsche 917 at Le Mans

Porsche LogoThe 1970s are often regarded as a golden era in racing. Cars were fast, courses were incredible, and the energy was electric. No single race quite captured the spirit of this racing better than Le Mans, and no vehicle captured the flag at Le Mans better than the Porsche 917.

Many racing experts agree that the Porsche 917 is the greatest racing vehicle ever created. Right at the turn of the decade in 1969, the 917 made its debut at Le Mans. That year, the 917 failed to capture the winning trophy, due to an underestimated lack of stamina during the course. However, a year later in 1970, the 917’s winning streak would commence.

The 1970 Le Mans race was defined by a heated rivalry between the Porsche 917 and the Ferrari 512. Throughout the race, both vehicles were neck and neck. However, the 917 was eventually able to power through and reach the victory circle first.

The Porsche 917 repeated its victory in 1971, securing its place as one of the best racing vehicles of the decade.

Le Mans continues to be one of the longest standing races in the world. Meanwhile, the Porsche 917 continues to be a large part of the Le Mans legacy!
