Tips on How to Drive in the Rain

Driving in the spring means that, occasionally, you’ll have to drive in the rain. Wet roads can lead to a number of potential hazards, which is why we here at Gossett VW Porsche want to provide you with some tips on how to drive in the rain safely.

Keep an eye out for hydroplaning. Hydroplaning occurs when your vehicle gets more traction on the water covering the road than the road itself, which causes your vehicle to begin sliding. If this occurs, remember to slowly take your foot off the gas pedal and steer in a straight line to help regain control of your car.

Keep cruise control off. Cruise control is a fantastic feature to have when the roads are dry, but it can actually make you at more risk for hydroplaning. Keep cruise control off on wet roads, because when it’s on, if you do hydroplane your car will actually try to go faster.

Increase your following distance. When roads are wet, it can be difficult to stop on a dime, so give yourself plenty of time to react to traffic by adding one or two seconds to your following distance when you’re behind another car.

Turn on your headlights. Many people forget that all states require you to turn on your headlights if your windshield wipers are on – even if it’s a sunny rainstorm. When visibility is low, you want to make sure that you can see everything around you more easily and that others can see you, too, so lights on!

The rains are coming, so make sure to keep these tips in mind in the coming months. Stay safe out there!

Volkswagen’s Future Lineup Will Include AI Technology

Over the past decade or so, in-car technology has taken big steps forward and it shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, in a recent announcement, we learned that Volkswagen’s future lineup will include artificial intelligent technology. To make this possible, VW is teaming up with NVIDIA, a tech leader in artificial intelligence engineering.

“Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the car,” Volkswagen CEO Dr. Herbert Diess said. “Autonomous driving, zero tailpipe emission mobility and digital networking are virtually impossible without advances in AI and deep learning. Combining the imagination of Volkswagen with NVIDIA, the leader in AI technology, enables us to take a big step into the future.”

In the not-too-distant future, VW says we will see vehicles that have AI assistants built in that will help with voice commands and gesture and facial recognition. These vehicles will be both safer and more enjoyable to ride in.

VW will begin gradually introducing autonomous and AI driving capabilities starting in 2020. This will go hand-in-hand with its goal to have a lineup of more than 20 fully-electric vehicles by 2025.

Here at Gossett VW Porsche, we are excited to see where the future of mobility will take Volkswagen and the rest of the automotive industry.

Schedule seasonal check-ups

Perhaps it seems like a waste of money to have your car checked out if it’s not causing you any trouble, but regularly taking your car to a technician to get checked out will save you money in the end. Most important, though, is resolving to drive safely and responsibly all year long. Doing so is the best way to protect your car, and everyone along for the ride.

What to Know When Hosting Thanksgiving Dinner

Many people go to their relatives’ homes for the holidays. But if you’re in charge of hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year, you might find that you have a little more on your plate than usual. Here’s some advice from Gossett VW Porsche on how to survive the big day.

Prepare in Advance

Some dishes will have to wait until the last minute, but if you can make a few dishes in advance, do it in order to save yourself some stress. Meal-prep what you can’t cook so that it’s as simple as possible on the day off, meaning you’ll have more time to catch up.

Stick with The Tried-And-True

Thanksgiving is about tradition, so you don’t have to go wild with some experimental meals in order to wow your guests. Stick with what you know people like: turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, candied yams, cranberry, stuffing, and, of course, pumpkin pie.

Set the Table Beforehand

It may seem silly to set the table the night before, but doing so leaves you with one less task that to do while preparing the next morning. Or, if you have a lot of young ones running around, put them to the task and keep them occupied.

Not Everything Has to Be Homemade

Buy pies from a bakery or get premade gravy to help cut down on work. You don’t have to tell anyone that you bought it from a store—they probably won’t notice the difference anyway, and it’s unlikely that they would be hurt even if they did because of how much effort you’re already putting into everything else.

Schedule Your Shower

You need to look good for the celebrations, too, so make sure to leave time for you to get ready. Pick out some nice, semi-business casual dress and set the expectation that your table guests should look somewhat nice as well.

Ask for Help

Last of all, don’t be afraid to delegate tasks and bring in some assistance. Too many cooks in the kitchen can be a problem, so set your friends and relatives to minor tasks to keep them occupied and keep you less busy.

Hosting Thanksgiving dinner

While hosting Thanksgiving dinner, remember not to get too stressed out. After all, it’s about spending a holiday with the people you love. It may seem like a lot of work in the lead-up, but the end-goal is well worth the struggle.

How to Wax Your Car

Woman waxing her car

Learning how to wax your car the right way is an easy way to keep your car looking great and prolong the life of its paint.

Supplies

  • Electric orbital buffer
  • Buffing pads
  • Buffing compound
  • Car wax
  • Microfiber cloths

Buffing

If your car has any weathered surfaces or scratches, it is a good idea to buff your car before waxing. This removes a fine layer of paint and waxing right afterwards restores the paint’s original shine. However, this should only be done about once a year.

Start buffing by spreading the buffing compound onto the car using a buffing pad without running on the buffer. Work one quarter-panel at a time and avoid chrome, rubber, and glass surfaces. Once the compound is spread, turn on the buffer and work in circular motions, holding the pad flat. Repeat the process across the entire car.

Waxing

Using a clean buffing pad, apply wax using a gentle pulsing of the buffer, one quarter-panel at a time. Once the wax is applied, let it set for the time required (read the label), and then remove any excess with a microfiber cloth using a circular motion. Repeat across all painted surfaces. Waxing is recommended every three months.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas Review

2018 Volkswagen Atlas

Volkswagen is turning its eye towards the American automotive market, where larger SUVs are selling like hotcakes. The European brand has long chosen to develop premium mid-size vehicles, but it’s changing course with the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas—a full-size three-row SUV designed for American families.

“After spending a few weeks with our own 2018 Atlas, it’s clear VW built an ultra-functional, family-friendly three-row SUV,” Consumer Reports said in their review.

Unlike many full-size SUVs, the Volkswagen Atlas offers a comfortable, firm ride on paved roadways. The standard all-wheel drive configuration offers responsive handling.

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas features a 3.6-liter V6 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. That smooth-shifting powertrain delivers a hearty 276 hp. Later this year, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will offer 235 hp and improved efficiency.

The Volkswagen Atlas features sharp exterior styling that sets it apart from its closest competitors. The spacious interior offers three-row seating that’s perfect for larger families.

Premium materials and ergonomic controls make long road trips not only manageable, but enjoyable. The 6.5-inch and 8-inch touchscreen systems offer Apple CarPlay and Android Autocompatibility.

We here at Gossett Volkswagen Porsche are happy to see the 2018 Atlas getting the praise it deserves!
