Porsches are for racing–but they’re for the road, too! The all-new 2016 Porsche 911 R reflects exactly that. After its premiere at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show, it was clear that Porsche was tipping its hat to its past.
The first road-homologated race car bore the “911 R” name in 1967 (The “R” stands for “Racing”). The original was entered in rallies, in world record runs, and in the Targa Florio. Porsche hopes to continue that tradition with the 2016 911 R.
This car is more lightweight than ever, and is actually the lightest version of the 911 R available, weighing in at only 3,021 pounds. This car is truly “unfiltered” and you wouldn’t believe how streamlined it is.
This light, simplified 911 R comes without the “luxuries,” so there is neither air conditioning nor radio! But don’t worry, those can be added right back in, for free, at the customer’s request. Even the inside door handles are gone! Technically, they’re not gone, but there are door-opening loops instead.
This lightness means it can go up to 200 mph. So, if you want a lightweight race car, the new Porsche 911 R is the one for you.
The 2016 VW Jetta GLI 2.0T is awfully sporty all on its own. This great-looking version of the Jetta was recently enhanced by the Italian garage MOMO and in the process got a whole lot sportier.
What we might call the “Italian treatment” involved a number of exciting additions. The 2016 VW Jetta GLI 2.0T MOMO Edition sits on MOMO-custom 19-inch, aluminum-alloy wheels. Called MOMO Revenge wheels, they feature a unique mesh design.
The Jetta MOMO edition offers superb handling and response. MOMO added sway bars both at the front and rear of the vehicle. They also added coilovers at every wheel. The Milltek Sport exhaust not only gives this superbly-tuned Jetta a great sound but it also improves airflow. With all of the quickness this model offers, you also need excellent stopping power. Brembo brakes do the job just fine with 14.4-inch diameter front rotors and monobloc four-piston calipers.
The event featured a two-day tournament between the players and included Andy Roddick and Michael Chang, both of whom came out of retirement briefly to participate. Sharapova wanted to get players ready for the Australian Open in a more serious exhibition match than usual.
Porsche officials expressed excitement at the partnership with Sharapova for the event, saying the “power and elegance” of the sport and of Sharapova herself are “the exact characteristics that are conveyed in our sports cars.”
The 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera was present at the tournament, highlighting the connection to sportiness and athleticism the brand aims for. The 2017 Carrera is more powerful than ever, with an even higher horsepower than previous models, bringing it up to 370 hp.
Because Porsche is known for its high-performance 911 models, it came as a surprise to many that the brand recently announced it would be creating over 1,000 jobs to build the new Porsche Mission E. This all-electric model is well-known for its quick charge times and advanced technologies.
The Porsche Mission E design is drawing attention as an alternative for gasoline-powered high-performance models. While there are some models out there like it, including the Tesla and BMW i8, the Mission E has a whopping 600 hp and charges to 80% in 15 minutes, according to iDigital Times. You heard right!
“Digitization will be growing up with us,” said Uwe Huck, Deputy Chairman of the Porsche AG Supervisory Board. “And Factory 4.0 will be a major challenge for the workforce, trade union and employer. We will be taking new approaches but not giving up on the social aspects. With this decision, Porsche is driving flat out with no speed restrictions into the automotive and industrial future.”
Though many thought the Mission E might just be a cool concept car, Porsche’s announcement that it would be setting aside resources for 1,000 new jobs to make the car drew astonished reactions. This model could just redefine the way we think about cars.
As if the Macan couldn’t get any cooler, Porsche has decided to honor the Macan line with a GTS badge for 2017. Striking aesthetic enhancements and thrilling performance enhancements ensue, all dressed in a compelling red and black.
In the performance department, the 2017 Porsche Macan GTS sees tweaks on all levels. For braking, the Macan GTS will feature large 360 mm rotors up front and in the rear with red calipers adding a dash of color behind the black, alloy wheels. Air suspension is a standard feature on the Macan GTS and ride height is lowered 10-millimeter reduction to improve center of gravity.
Under the hood, the 2017 Porsche Macan GTS uses the same powertrain as the Macan S. It’s a powerful six-cylinder with two turbochargers. With all of the unique enhancements for the GTS, output is measured at 360 horsepower and 369 lb-ft for torque. Add the available Sport Chrono Package and the all-new 2017 Porsche Macan GTS will take you from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.
First and foremost, we will see a new engine with these two models. Porsche has designed and perfected a 3.0-liter flat six twin-turbo motor that delivers 370 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque. That’s 20 more horsepower than the previous year. Pick up the “4” versions of these two models and enjoy 50 more horsepower and 37 more lb-ft. of torque.
Not just in the power department, the improvements for the Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Carrera 4 include enhancements in handling and response as well. The electro-hydraulically controlled all-wheel drive that the 911 has become well-known for has been designed to respond “even more quickly and sensitively.” The Porsche Active Suspension Management is standard to all Carrera models. According to a press release, PASM not only “aids stability during cornering,” it also “lowers the ride height by 10 millimeters compared to the previous model.”
Sounds like the Porsche 911 is headed in the right direction!
After a grueling 21 months of waiting for production to finish, the Porsche 918 Spyder has officially rolled off the line. The performance hybrid with plug-in technology is truly a masterpiece. Its stunning design and impressive performance have us all drooling and waiting to get our hands on it.
